Woman With Very Unusual Name Wants To Change It After Being Picked On For Years

Woman With Very unusual name wants to change it after being picked on for years.

A woman has turned to the internet for help after revealing a desire to change her unusual name.

She’s had enough of her birth name

For most people their name is a massive part of their identity.

For others, a nickname or pet name suits them much better, than what they were called at birth.

Thankfully we all have the opportunity to legally change our name if we so wish to do so.

But as Phoebe Buffay showed us when she changed her name to Princess Consuela Bananahammock on Friends, the process can have its downsides.

One woman, who isn’t a big fan of her given name, has revealed her desire to change it, but she’s having a bit of trouble actually making the leap.

A woman named ‘John’ wants to change her name – but her mum is furious about it

In a post on Reddit, a user admitted that her parents had given her a rather bizarre name when she was little.

They’d opted to name her after her grandfather, who was called John, and her male name has attracted a lot of unwanted attention over the years.

John claims she’s been picked on at school and is fed up of it.

Now engaged and preparing to marry and change her surname, she also hopes to change her first name as well.

But there’s just one problem – her mother.

The woman has turned to the internet for advice

She wrote: “My parents named me after my grandpa, which, although I like the gesture, they didn’t do the female version of it or anything.

“My name is practically John, a short male name that doesn’t have a girlie nickname.

“I’ve been made fun of it all throughout school, and now that I’m 21 and engaged I’m looking into changing my first AND last name, to a nickname based off my current last name that my friends have always used for me.”

She continued: “I brought it up to my mom and she says she’d never accept the new name as my real name and that she thinks I’m forsaking the memory of my grandfather. She has made it clear she doesn’t approve and would be insanely mad.”

Lots of people told her to go for it

John went on to ask if she’d be an “a**hole” to do it without her mother’s blessing, as the nickname feels more like her name than her “real name does”.

Over 100 people responded to her post, with many people telling her to do what makes her happy.

One person replied: “It’s your name. If you don’t like it, you have every right to change it. If your family is so hell bent on you being named after your grandfather, then make that your middle name and change your first name.

“Your mother is being an a**hole for ignoring your happiness.”

Another posted: “You can’t set yourself on fire to keep her warm.”

A third added: “Your parents are a**holes for naming you that. Go and do it. People have suggested other ways to honour your grandfather that seem far better.”

However some people thought she should keep the name to “honour” her relative.

Someone else wrote: “Speaking personally, if you name someone after a beloved deceased relative with many good qualities, it can be a good thing for a child to have some history behind their name.”
